Media workplaces
Arup has extensive experience in crafting inspiring headquarters, campuses and workplaces for broadcast and media companies including Bloomberg, China Central Television (CCTV) and Sky.
For these projects we focus on environments that combine performance and abundant amenities with design that enhance overall wellbeing.
At Sky's headquarters, Sky Central, we collaborated on the design of a contemporary workplace, consolidating 3,500 staff members in a single building. The design encompasses an array of services and amenities, including diverse restaurants and cafes, a 200-seat cinema, a versatile event space, and a technology 'lounge,' fostering a vibrant and dynamic work atmosphere conducive to creativity and collaboration.
At the heart of the design is the innovative long-span roof, featuring deep beams spanning up to 21 meters: with 'plug-in' mezzanines, ramps, and stairs the facility encourages staff circulation and interaction, resulting in spontaneous collaborations. Even within this expansive site, the HVAC strategy verified by our building physics team ensures thermal comfort while minimising energy consumption.
Sky is Europe’s leading direct-to-consumer media and entertainment company, serving 24 million customers. The company had decided to redevelop its campus headquarters with a new home for their ‘Believe in Better’ schools outreach programme and Academy training facilities. With aspirations of being more than just a training base, the building needed to be an inspiring showpiece for Sky’s corporate values and long-term sustainability goals, whilst being flexible enough to respond to the diverse needs of it many users.
We believe that good architecture should understand the lives and priorities of those that use it. The Believe in Better Building has a clear social idea based around community focus, education, and incredible flexibility for Sky’s fast-changing corporate culture.
Reflecting Sky’s commitment as a carbon-neutral company, the architecture also incorporates extensive environmental innovation. It is a structure that does a lot with very few materials, most notably its use of sustainable wood that makes it the UK’s tallest commercial timber building.
