Optimising national road networks
We are increasingly focused on optimising existing national and regional road networks, working with clients to make the most of existing infrastructure, and developing ongoing improvement strategies.

Existing road networks are being reshaped by the need to accommodate new vehicle technologies and wider road use goals. The transition to electric vehicles (EV) is a key element of many government’s plans to reduce carbon emissions from roads. We’re helping clients across the globe look at what changes they need to make to their networks, including where and what type of EV charging should be available to support the transition.
We also develop strategies for tolling and mobility pricing, designing fair and user-centric solutions aligned to the objectives of the scheme. We’re providing a full operational management role for Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s M50 free-flow toll in Dublin which is improving journey times and improving safety on a busy orbital motorway around a thriving city.
We are being asked to partner with clients who manage increasingly ageing – or stressed – road assets and networks. Our asset management capability supports clients looking to renew or restore ageing assets, safely extending their life for as long as possible without the need to replace with new infrastructure.
Access to public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure has been defined as a key part of supporting the transition to greener transport, and to meet this challenge, we have been working to assess gaps in charging infrastructure at UK motorway service stations.
To help develop an accurate estimate of likely energy requirements for each site, we analysed individual movements from regional transport models to better understand how people are likely to use charging stations throughout the day.
We worked closely with a variety of stakeholders to deliver the study, including MSA operators, charging operators, distribution network operators, National Grid, Pivot Power and Highways England.
Our analysis has fed into the publication of a policy paper outlining the UK government’s vision for the rapid chargepoint network in England in May 2020.
