Station architecture and urban design
In ever growing cities, rail station design means much more than providing a simple entry point to the service.
Station design needs to balance scale, ease of use, practicality and flow. In a competitive landscape for transport options, stations must be appealing places to arrive, dwell and leave.
For us, station design always starts with the passenger and user experience. Getting it right means thinking about the these two critical elements and combining it with the local city, transport and economic planning levers to optimise station design to fulfil its potential.
With the high investment costs associated with rail infrastructure we understand the significance of providing good value for money. Our rail architecture and design team has global experience blending function with elegance in a cost-effective manner for rail clients. Our kit-of-parts design approach ensures maintenance and replacements remain affordable over the rail system’s full lifespan.
HS2 is a state-of-the-art, high-speed rail line critical for the UK’s low carbon transport future. Four new stations are being delivered as part of the first phase of the project. Interchange Station, a major transport gateway to the West Midlands, will link Solihull and the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), and is the first ever station to achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification.
As well as being sustainable, the station will be one of the best-connected places in the UK. Passengers will be able to reach London Euston in 38 minutes, Manchester in 37 minutes and Leeds in 46 minutes. The station will boast four platforms and two high speed through lines for non-stopping services and includes cycle storage for 176 bikes, with further room for expansion as required.
