Station engineering design and modelling
Station engineering design presents a unique range of challenges, from establishing rigorous fire safety to creating high performance but sustainable mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and ventilation systems, and the need to make new platforms and tunnels connect seamlessly with existing stations.
Arup’s rail experts undertake technical design for major rail stations, always focusing on producing the best, most intuitive passenger experience, balanced with the operational and maintenance needs of station managers. Our design approach is to optimise station siting and alignment, to generate the best outcome for the pedestrians while maximising the commercial opportunities that are vital parts of a station’s performance.
Our approach is also refined by deep data insights. We use our own MassMotion pedestrian and crowd simulation software to provide technical analysis of people’s movement through physical spaces. It helps clients to understand station users’ different movement behaviours and passenger flows. It provides vital design insights to our planners and engineers as they test design proposals, and define operational overlays with the benefit of real human perspective.
Located in the heart of Hong Kong, Admiralty Station is a mega railway station with four-line interchanging. Arup was engaged for the detailed multidisciplinary design of this terminus for the South Island Line (East) and SCL to provide four new platforms and interchange with two existing lines. Our scope of work included lead consultant, planning, architectural sub-consultancy, civil, structural and geotechnical engineering, building services, fire engineering and other specialist services.
To address the complex station arrangement and constraints involving the railway facilities for the operating Tsuen Wan and Island lines, we designed the proposed phased sequencing of works for the removal of the solid rock beneath the box and insertion of a permanent structural framework to carry it, setting a precedent in Hong Kong.
By adopting real-time monitoring and a computerised jacking system, the contractor was able to control the undue movements induced by the construction and the underpinning works, thus ensuring passenger comfort and smooth operation of the running metro lines.
