Leading industry news site, World Architecture News (WAN), recently announced Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre at Moorfields as the 2009 Healthcare Building of the Year.
Arup worked with the winning architect, Penoyre & Prasad, for two years to deliver a full range of design services including mechanical and electrical engineering, communications, lighting, wind engineering, acoustics and controls services for this specialist paediatric clinical and outpatient facility.
Completed in 2005, the building has consistently garnered attention since, including nods from the Civic Trust Awards and the Building Better Healthcare Awards in the UK.
According to the WAN judging panel, comprised of representatives from the UK National Health Service and the wider architecture community, the project is a, “simple clear massing and organisation between front and back of house.”
The WAN Award scheme is among the most prestigious of its kind and is unique for its use of ‘ground level’ judges, who have previously included a 13 year old schoolgirl and a head teacher.
