Arup bags gold and silver at IStructE China Awards 2009

18 Jan 2010

Two Arup projects claimed Gold and Silver at the 2009 IStructE China Awards.

The Beijing National Stadium (or the Bird’s Nest) won Gold while Hong Kong’s 308m tall One Island East tower received Silver. The awards were presented at a ceremony held during December 2009 in Beijing.

For Beijing National Stadium, a joint submission by Arup and China Architectural Design and Research Group (CADG, the Local Design Institute), received the IStructE China Gold Award. The success reinforces a string of accolades the iconic Stadium has attracted since completion, including the RIBA Lubetkin prize and the Tien-Yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize. The jury panel praised the structural design by Arup/CADG resolved the high technical challenges resulted from the stadium’s complex architecture.

One Island East tower was acknowledged for adopting the latest advances in materials and methods of analysis. According to IStructE the successful high-rise building is the result of excellent structural engineering design. The full use of BIM, the first in Hong Kong, also led to substantial economies in both design and construction. The commercial tower makes extensive use of grade100 high strength concrete in walls and columns, reducing construction materials and increasing the usable floor area.

The awards were presented by Graham Owens, President of IStructE, with Tony Choi and Maverick Chan receiving the awards on behalf of Arup. Michael Kwok, Birds Nest Project Director and seismic specialist, Goman Ho, also attended the presentation ceremony.

Earlier in 2009 both projects also won the Grand Awards in both Hong Kong Projects category and Mainland China/Overseas Projects category at the Structural Excellence Award 2009 presented by the Joint Structural Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and IStructE in recognition of design merits in structural engineering.
