Arup has been appointed by Guildford Borough Council to develop a long term movement strategy to 2050 for the town of Guildford.

Arup’s Transport Planning and Foresight + Innovation teams will be working with decision-makers, partners and other stakeholders to develop and apply a scenario planning approach to establish desirable transport futures.

These futures might include, for example, the increased use of sustainable transport modes such as public transport, walking and cycling, or the use of technology to improve traffic management in the town and to reduce vehicle emissions through the uptake of electric cars.

For each scenario, the pathway of action required to get there will be identified. This contrasts with conventional transport strategy work that involves forecasting future travel patterns and then developing investment programmes in response to the forecast trends.

This is an important study for the Council. We are seeking to establish an ambitious strategy to inform the way forward to facilitate a transport system which will serve the Guildford of the future. ” Cllr James Palmer Council’s deputy leader and lead councilor for infrastructure

This is an unusual and exciting project looking at how transport can support a more sustainable Guildford, improving health and quality of life, and encouraging economic development. People and their communities are central to our approach - this project is a perfect fit with Arup’s strategic transport planning thinking and our Drivers of Change research which has explored factors which will affect our world in the future. ” Susan Claris Susan Claris Transport Planner

The key output of the study – a strategy report setting out the preferred transport future scenario and its benefits, the pathway back to the present, and the recommended package of interventions – will be delivered at the end of February 2014.
