Andrew Chan awarded HKIE Gold Medal

Andrew Chan was honoured by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers with “The HKIE Gold Medal 2014” at its 39th annual dinner on 18 March.

 

This prestigious award honours a most outstanding engineer for his achievements and contributions to engineering.

Dr Chan has been Deputy Chair of the global Arup Group for the last 7 years. A leading veteran in international civil, geotechnical and multidisciplinary engineering, he is recognised for his significant contributions to and achievements in the engineering profession and the society over the past 40 years. He is distinguished for his leadership in the creation, design and delivery of many innovative and award-winning building projects as well as major infrastructure schemes including sustainable urban development, transport and energy projects for many cities in Asia. In recent years, Dr Chan has been active in promotion of the engineers’ leadership role in sustainability and a low carbon future for cities.

Dr Chan has been an influential figure and served on many statutory and advisory bodies in Hong Kong. He actively supports engineering education and has lectured at universities and conferences in Hong Kong and internationally, and published widely on his vision, projects and practices of planning, design and construction.

He is a Past President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Fellow and Senior Vice President of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences and, for his achievements, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK’s national academy. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the HKSAR Government and awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2012 for his contribution to engineering and the built-environment in Hong Kong.

Two other Arupians were recognised at the annual dinner. Bruce Chong was awarded Certificate of Merit in the Young Engineer of the Year Award, while Victor Shea won the Certificate of Merit in the Innovation Awards for Young Members.
