Arup Director Tim Chapman has been made a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng).

The Academy's Fellows represent the nation’s best engineering researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, business and industry leaders. Election to the Academy is by invitation only and about 50 Fellows are selected each year by peer review from nominations made by existing Fellows.

Tim has been recognised by the RAEng for his exceptional contribution to the built environment over the past 27 years and will now be distinguished by the title ‘Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering’ and the postnominal FREng.

Tim is an expert in geotechnical engineering and leads Arup’s Infrastructure Design Group. He is distinguished for his innovative geotechnical designs of challenging building and civil engineering projects and for his contributions to design guidance and practice. He has also made significant contributions to geotechnical risk management, and planning and designing for low carbon infrastructure.

It is a great privilege to be recognised by my peers and the Academy, and to join such a distinguished group of engineers. I am deeply indebted to Arup for the great career it has given me, the opportunity to become involved in so many areas, and for the support of my colleagues in being able to contribute so broadly. This appointment provides a fantastic opportunity to share ideas with the best minds in the industry and I hope that it will further inspire the many talented young engineers over the years to keep pushing the boundaries.

This is an exciting time the industry as engineers are being asked to provide answer to many of the world’s challenges – such as climate change, infrastructure resilience and rapid urbanisation – and a fresh approach to infrastructure provision is helping to meet these complex issues from the ground up.
