NEXTDC’s S1 Sydney data centre has been awarded the inaugural DatacenterDynamics APAC Award for Innovation in the Mega Data-Centre, taking top honours over 100 entrants from across the region.

Designed by Arup, S1 Sydney features the latest innovations in energy efficient, high-performance data centre design.

S1 – an 11.5MW (IT), enterprise-grade data centre – was lauded as a technologically outstanding facility, particularly in regards to its target power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3 at peak load which would be amongst efficient of any data centre of its size. Arup provided NEXTDC with a full, multidisciplinary service, comprised of the electrical, mechanical, fire and hydraulic engineering for the project.

Judges also highlighted the use of advanced Iso-Parallel electrical distribution system supported by Diesel Rotary UPS. This technology allows continuous supply of power to be generated on site, ensuring total service continuity and stability. This was amongst the first uses of the technology in the Asia Pacific region. Free cooling systems draw on the latent cooling benefits of both air and water to minimise energy consumption.

The data centre market is underlined by an ever-increasing demand to balance reliability of power, energy efficiency and cost. When dealing with loads of 16MW, even small improvements in efficiency generate huge savings. We met these demands through, amongst other things, the use of the innovative iso-parallel UPS topology and both water-side and air-side free cooling. The S1 data centre has received the Uptime Institute’s Tier III certification for both design and construction.
