The AUD $5.6 billion Airport Link, Northern Busway, and Airport Roundabout Upgrade Project in Brisbane, Queensland, was one of the six FIDIC Outstanding Projects of 2014 awarded at the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) gala in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, 30 September 2014.

The FIDIC awards recognise outstanding projects that support and promote the use of international FIDIC best practice with six projects from around the world receiving the ‘outstanding’ title.

The AU$5.6bn Brisbane Airport Link, one of the largest road and transport infrastructure projects in Australia’s history, was designed by the Parsons Brinckerhoff Arup Joint Venture (PBA).

The landmark infrastructure project for Brisbane tackles traffic congestion, enhancing the busway network and removing an infamous traffic bottleneck through an innovative and inspired design.

The project has already won a number of awards for innovation, excellence and design and the international recognition from FIDIC really highlights the global best practice that has gone into the design and construction of this significant piece of infrastructure. ” Luke Van Heuzen PBAJV Project Director

During construction, a PBA team of 35 engineers worked collaboratively with Thiess John Holland’s construction teams to deliver engineering support and robust construction certification. ” Simon O'Hara Former Construction Phase Services Manager

More than 1,000 PBA staff worked over one million hours from start-up in November 2006 to demobilisation from site in July 2012. In this time, the team produced over 18,000 for-construction drawings in 600 packages through a total of 3,600 submission cycles.

After over two years of operation, feedback from users has been extremely positive with surface traffic congestion reduced by 45% and journey times to the airport delivering a time savings of 20 minutes by avoiding 18 sets of traffic lights.
