Arup provided integrated design services to create a sustainable world-class performing arts centre for renowned Institut Le Rosey’s Carnal Hall.

On 2 October, Institut Le Rosey celebrated the completion of Paul & Henri Carnal Hall, a new 110,000ft2 addition to the prestigious school in Switzerland. The visually striking performing arts centre will support Le Rosey’s arts education programme and performances by international orchestras, choirs, artists, and speakers.

Arup collaborated with Bernard Tschumi Architects on the design and provided multi-disciplinary services including acoustic consulting, theatre consulting, façade engineering, lighting design, and structural, mechanical, and plumbing engineering. The facilities include a rehearsal studio, a black box theatre, classrooms, a library, offices, a restaurant, and apartments, all centred around the 800-seat symphony hall.

Together with Tschumi, Arup carefully crafted the interiors of the hall to create superb acoustical results, balancing reverberance, clarity, intimacy and envelopment, for a richer sound than larger symphony halls. Our SoundLab facility helped Le Rosey make the decision to structurally isolate the hall against ground-borne train vibrations, and in turn enabled them to create a hall to rival some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe. ” Alban Bassuet headshot Alban Bassuet Associate Principal, Boston Acoustics Lead

The striking design and high-quality acoustics place Paul & Henri Carnal Hall with the Lucern and Geneva concert halls as a major destination for both Swiss and international orchestras.
