Corinthia Nevsky Palace Hotel

Completed in May 2009, this impressive mixed development in St Petersburg includes a 400-room, 5-star hotel, 10,000m² of retail and 7,000m² of offices.

The existing hotel has been refurbished and extended into an adjoining building at Nevsky Prospekt 59 in the very centre of St Petersburg.

The development also includes a stand-alone retail centre on two floors with nearly 26 retail outlets at Nevsky Prospekt 55. The remaining area houses top-of-the-range offices for lease to businesses in St Petersburg.

The main challenge for Arup was to reconstruct buildings 55 and 59 without damaging the neighbouring and historic buildings. These had been built on shallow wooden rafts on what was originally swamp land. When the existing hotel 57 was built in the 1990s, it severely damaged buildings 55 and 59 by disturbing groundwater levels. The resulting instability has been Arup's main design challenge.

Arup was the design team leader for architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, public health engineering, fire-safety and acoustics. With offices in Moscow and London working together the team of sub-consultants was able to ensure that the historic facades and interiors of this palace were restored to their original beauty.
