Situated on the east side of the Huangpu River, this luxury hotel building captures the breathtaking views of Shanghai’s legendary riverfront. The 180 m tall extension provides 300 hotel rooms and 200 serviced apartments. The tower rises from a three-level podium sitting above a two-level basement.
The building features a simple and elegant facade. To maximise the tower frontage facing the river and create a contrast to the classic outlook of the existing hotel, the new tower took a unique form of irregularity and asymmetry on plan, with a slim north and south elevation. To allow a grand archway for traffic at the ground level, a large transfer structure, 20m above the ground, was designed to support the 30-storey hotel above.
As Shanghai is in the seismic zone, the unique tower layout and the high level transfer provided a challenge both to Arup engineers and the local statutory authorities. Sophisticated computational modelling and non-linear analysis were conducted into the complicated structural behavior under different load cases and the fine-tuning of the layout for an optimum solution.
