Shannon LNG Terminal

  • A private LNG regasification terminal development, providing increased security of supply.
  • The first private development under Strategic Infrastructure development legislation in Ireland.

Arup provided project management and engineering advice from the early feasibility stages of a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal on a 104 hectare site located on the Shannon Estuary in the West of Ireland.

Arup assisted in the selection of the site for the proposed terminal, which required good access to a deep water harbour and close proximity to gas and electricity transmission infrastructures.

The scope of services included the assistance in the development of the layout and civil infrastructure and all-site investigation and survey work (metocean, geotechnical, archaeological, and environmental).

Arup also prepared the Environmental Impact Statement for the project and managed the planning application, including public hearings and submissions.

In 2008, the project received planning permission under the new Strategic Infrastructure Development legislation, the first private development to do so. Arup also managed the application for four foreshore licenses associated with the project.

The project has now moved to front-end design activities and is progressing applications for gas and electricity transmission grid connections and local infrastructure upgrades.
