Developing the infrastructure for electric and hydrogen powered transport
Get in touch

Vehicles are undergoing significant changes after over a century of reliance on petrol and diesel and new government mandates signalling the end of this carbon fuelled era. Achieving the transition to decarbonised road transport, with the supporting electric and hydrogen infrastructure, remains a major work in progress. We are working on behalf of governments, cities and organisations worldwide, to develop vital strategies and associated infrastructure for the next generation of transport.

Overcoming the charging challenge

New charging infrastructure – electric or hydrogen – will be key to the rapid adoption of new modes of mobility to decarbonise the transport sector. We partner with cities from LA to Sydney to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure, supporting them from initial studies to roll-out strategies, including commercial decisions.

We bring experts together expertise across energy, transport and cities to plan and share best practice and expertise to use data and digital tools to inform studies, examining the best options for rapid and longer-range charging.

EV charging in Wales

We helped develop the Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy for Wales to 2030, which sets out a vision to provide people and business across the nation with equal access to EV charging. The strategy provides a common framework to support the public and private sectors, as well as individuals, in their transition to net-zero.

Accelerating adoption and opening opportunities

Organisations with large vehicle fleets, from online retailers to transit providers, have an important role to play in reducing emissions. Our teams are working with businesses across industries to enable net-zero transport by unlocking supply chain challenges, establishing strategies and enabling procurement while defining new commercial opportunities in the market.

For zero emission mobility to have the widest impact, it must be considered as a whole system; every decision has an impact elsewhere. So we work with cities on entire electric vehicles programmes that consider wide-ranging factors such as societal value, economic impact, commercial opportunity, and cost effectiveness. Working together with fleet operators, we developed Charge4Fleets to simplify and accelerate solutions through digital insight and rapid scenario exploration.

Streamlining the electrification of fleets with Charge4Fleets

The electrification of fleets can be complex and costly. To ease the successful transition, Arup developed Charge4Fleets working with fleet operators. Charge4Fleets is a digital enabled solution for accelerating all-electric fleets, routes, and charging infrastructure. Learn how we are helping fleet owners and operators make the electrification process cost-effective, resilient, and sustainable.

Meeting new energy demand

Any zero-emission vehicle project depends on efficient reliable energy supply and improved energy storage - with this, electric grids need to increase capacity rapidly and be able to manage new levels and patterns of demand.

We apply our experience from across the entire energy market from generation to supply, which enables us to bring to bear expertise from renewable energy to microgrids. Working with stakeholders, we look at all considerations to ensure a resilient, reliable and cost-effective supply of clean energy for net-zero programmes. By working closely with utilities and cities, we developed Charge4All to help communities scale and accelerate equitable charging.

Scaling curbside charging infrastructure in California

To accelerate the adoption of EVs, California needs hundreds of thousands of publicly available curbside EV charging stations. But where should these charging stations be built, and how quickly and cost effectively can the EV infrastructure be scaled? Using Charge4All, we collaborated on a digitally enabled and equitable approach to answering this question.

Accelerating the switch to zero emission vehicles means incentivising new consumer behaviour, overcoming range anxiety, providing sufficient charging infrastructure and ensuring the energy grid can meet new demand. These issues will require close collaboration between public bodies and commercial players – we support clients to overcome these challenges by exploring new business model solutions, public private partnership options and other strategic insights.
