The Nokia China Campus in Beijing and Vanke Headquarters in Shenzhen have won the Green Leadership Award in the Commercial category at the BCI Green Design Award 2010.
Launched in 2009, the scheme was designed to recognise innovative and environmentally responsible architecture that has been designed, built and commissioned in Asia.
The Nokia China Campus, also known as the 'Nokia green building', is the first newly constructed commercial building in China to be awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certificate by the United States Green Building Council.
The headquarters is designed around sustainability and energy-efficient performance, making full use of natural light and ventilation. It has a double-skin façade with the ability to adjust the temperature automatically via the air between the panes. Together with the air conditioning, the indoor temperature will not be affected by the outdoor temperature. This design alone saves 14% of the building’s energy consumption.
Shenzhen Vanke Headquarters is an office complex for Vanke, one of the largest property developers in China. A major goal of the headquarters design is to achieve the LEED Platinum certification, at the same time apply relevant parameters to regulate other developments sustainably.
The Arup team focused on adaptation, low resource consumption and environmentally friendly and socially harmonious aspects, to generate cost effective sustainable design solutions for the complex.
The project's sustainability is not limited to its resource use optimisation, but also emphasises the social benefits on regional regeneration, community life and publicising sustainability.
