Arup is developing the masterplan for the Istanbul New Airport – which with an ultimate capacity of over 150 million passengers per annum is expected to become one of the largest in the world.
Arup is working with the Turkish consortium of Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin and Kalyon, who in May won the concession to build and operate the airport for a period of 25 years.
The airport, to be located near the Black Sea coast on the European side of Istanbul, will replace the existing Ataturk Airport, and provide the capacity needed to support the continued rapid growth of air traffic in the city and the hub operations of Turkish Airlines. The first phase, including three runways, a major passenger terminal complex, cargo and other support facilities, will have a capacity of 90 million annual passengers.
This masterplanning commission follows on from Arup’s role as technical advisor to the consortium during the concession bid stage in the first quarter of 2013.
