Dr Stanley Yip, Arup’s Director of Planning and Development in China, will be sitting on a select panel of internationally renowned experts at the BT Global City Leaders’ Summit in June.

Dr Yip will join Vasily Petrenko, the multi award-winning Chief Conductor at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Catherine Cullen, Deputy Mayor of Lille and Chair of the United Cities and Local Government Committee on Culture, to discuss the role that culture plays in a city’s economy.

Stanley is an experienced town planner, land economist and urban designer with more than 25 years of professional and senior management experience around the world, and recently with a particular focus on urban development in Chinese cities such as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.

He will contribute to the panel debate through discussing how culture can shape cities and drive economic growth, urban regeneration and define a city’s image.

Culture has been identified as the major driver of economic growth in modern cities. While the fast growing cultural industry is generating much needed employment and bringing value added to the economy - it is also shaping urban fabric through the creative use, or reuse, of our buildings, public space and cultural assets.

The BT Global City Leader’s Summit will see more than 150 city leaders from around the world come together in Liverpool and promises to be one of the highlights of the International Festival for Business 2014 (IFB 2014). It takes place on Wednesday, June 18 at the historic St George’s Hall.

The summit is aligned with the Executive Bureau of the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), June 17-19, a leading international organisation that includes more than 1,000 cities across 95 countries and 112 national local government associations.

Arup is an official supporter of IFB 2014 which is the largest global concentration of business events during 2014. The 50-day festival runs across seven weeks in June and July and will attract business delegates and trade intermediaries from around the world to the UK and the host city, Liverpool.

It is also central to the government’s strategy to rebalance the economy and achieve its export and investment objectives.
