Based in Melbourne, Australia, Jim leads our Aviation Planning business globally, working with our aviation clients to help to shape the strategic direction of airport development from the outset to achieve greater efficiency and asset optimisation as well as deliver lower carbon, more sustainable outcomes.

Having joined Arup in 1998 and worked in three Arup regions (UKIMEA, Americas and Australasia), Jim has developed significant experience in all aspects of airport development, from strategy, feasibility and masterplanning through to terminal design delivery and project implementation. He is passionate about supporting our clients with their transition to a more sustainable, lower carbon future and can advise on more efficient, higher capacity landside, terminal and airfield arrangements; safeguarding for future sustainable aviation fuels, including hydrogen and electric; mitigation of noise and local emissions; sustainable surface access including transport hubs; as well as climate change resilience and adaptation.

Jim has led planning input and design teams on major aviation projects including Jetblue T5, Dublin Terminal 2, Eurostar at St. Pancras, Perth Airport Terminal 1, the Auckland Airport Master Plan, Luton DART as well as sustainable surface access for Gatwick Airport as part of its Northern Runway Development Consent Order. He is currently Project Director for Arup’s work exploring alternative terminal pathways at major airport hub in the Pacific region on behalf of Air New Zealand; evaluating airport design proposals at Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Lima, Peru for LATAM Airlines; and delivering the Townsville and Gold Coast Airport Master Plans in line with the Australian Airports Act.
