Transformative rail

How can metro rail systems transform a city?

Cities increasingly depend on their metro rail networks. High-capacity metro and mass transit lines are the sustainable way to move millions of people safely, comfortably and quickly through the world’s urban centres.

For over three decades, Arup has been working as part of a team of experts to deliver the Elizabeth line – an extraordinary feat of engineering and vital piece of London’s public transport infrastructure. The new east-west line will transform how people travel through London.

Crossrail offers many valuable lessons for other major metro projects around the world, from design choices to tunnelling techniques and environment, economic and social implications. We want to share what we’ve learned from this incredible scheme.

Listen to Arup economist, Matthew Dillon, explain how the benefits of a new rail line ripple out through the city and its communities.
