Net-zero operational carbon buildings: state of the art

How do we accelerate progress toward net zero in the property sector?

The UN’s High-Level Climate Champions 2030 Breakthrough Goals have set a target for 100% of building projects completed in 2030 to be net-zero in operation. This is part of a broader initiative to reduce carbon emissions from the built environment sector.

However, as this publication illustrates, there are several areas that are hindering progress such as lack of consistent definitions of what a net-zero building means and a lack of national policies in this area.

This report, co-authored by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and Arup, aims to address these issues. It demonstrates the absence of clear direction needed to drive the necessary change in behaviours, from CEOs to Facilities Managers to individual occupants, for progressing towards net zero. The publication reviews the current situation, highlights areas where progress is being made, and identifies key gaps that need to be addressed.
