An auditorium and chamber hall with acoustic flexibility

The Concertgebouw was commissioned by the City of Bruges as a focus for Bruges 2002, the European City of Culture.

Containing a 1200 seat auditorium and a smaller 330 seat chamber hall, Arup's acoustic team focused on creating a highly flexible design.

The main auditorium needs to accommodate orchestras, choirs, chamber music and opera. The diverse acoustic requirements of these events were achieved by designing a large opera stage with a movable orchestral enclosure.

The auditorium also includes an extensive system of sound absorbing banners and drapes, which control the acoustics for jazz performances and conferences, for example, events where amplified sound is used.

The smaller, chamber music hall is located above the main auditorium in the Lantanntoren. This intimate space is surrounded by a spiral of public viewing galleries.
