Transforming the theatre acoustics as part of a redevelopment plan

Sadler’s Wells Theatre is a landmark venue in London, offering the largest dance stage in Europe. With a highly flexible orchestra pit, the theatre also accommodates grand opera, musicals and ballet.

As part of the complex redevelopment programme for the theatre, Arup’s acoustics team was commissioned to develop a strategy to incorporate variable acoustic elements.

The resultant solution recommended raising the roof height to allow greater reverberation. And adding alternating sound absorbing and sound scattering architechtural treatments, concealed behind sound-transparent panels.

The acoustically enhanced theatre re-opened in 1998 and was shortlisted for the Royal Fine Art Commission Building of the Year Award in 1999.
