Arup’s presence in the United States began in 1985 in San Francisco. Since then, we’ve expanded to 11 offices around the US with 1,400 staff working in over 70 disciplines across dozens of industries and markets.
A few of our notable projects in the US include Seattle’s Space Needle redevelopment, the highly resilient 181 Fremont tower in San Francisco, sustainable design for the REACH expansion at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, an ambitious waterfront revitalization project for New York’s Hunter’s Point South, one of North America's first high-speed rail lines in Texas, and a climate action strategy to help the city of Los Angeles achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Our offices are set apart from competitors through our focus on community engagement, an endless curiosity to learn, and Equality, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) initiatives. Our EDI strategy aims to foster a sense of belonging and encourage talented people of all backgrounds to produce their best work for the benefit of our clients and the communities we live in.
The offices themselves are incubators for workplace design. Many of our offices have implemented circadian lighting design for increased comfort, while the Boston office was the first-ever WELL certified project in New England. Five offices in the US feature SoundLabs, which allow our engineers and consultants to hear how a space will sound as they design it. Each office has a flexible, open-floor layout with several breakout spaces to promote collaboration and dialogue among all disciplines and grades.
Movement between offices, countries, and regions is encouraged for all Arup staff as we strive to deliver locally focused, globally connected, and innovative projects that shape a better world. Meet our people
I think I chose Arup because of those great experiences I mentioned, as well as the people I worked with in the office! I love the fact that even though I'm in Acoustics, I'm often interacting with people in different disciplines across projects.
Several of my values overlap with Arup’s, and that is a big reason why I joined the firm. It’s important for me to leave a positive impact in my work and at Arup we are constantly considering how we can improve ourselves, our work and its impact.
I joined Arup straight from university. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of different project types including tall buildings, long-span space frame roofs and large-scale airport designs.
