In our new mini playbook on urban farming, we look at the social, economic and environmental benefits it can bring to communities, planners and developers alike.
Food has always been central to the way we live and the way our communities develop. As cities densify it is ever more critical that we use urban territory in the most beneficial and responsible way possible. Embedding urban agriculture into development of our towns and cities is both easier than people think, and beneficial in ways they didn’t expect. At Arup we are big advocates for the practice.
Initially developed for our own teams, this playbook shares insights for clients and the wider community, exploring the different forms of land use and food growing that are possible through the urban design and masterplanning process. Our goal is to help people understand the potential of urban agriculture and to implement such schemes in the real world.
If you work in urban planning, food retail, agriculture, residential/mixed-use development, we believe this guide will inspire you and demonstrate just how practical and cost-effective urban food growing can be.
