Lakenhal, Leiden

Multidisciplinary services in a well-structured approach using BIM

Built in 1640 the Lakenhal, a former broadcloth ('laken') factory and since 1874 used as a museum, needed a restoration. The key focus for the restoration of the 17th century museum was to bring balance to the time layers, which are the result of a number of changes that were made over the past. The traces of the past form a unique patina.

Working closely together with Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven Architecten and Julian Harrap Architects, we offered multidisciplinary services, such as fire safety, building services and lighting design. Using Building Information Modeling, we were able to envisage the physical and organisatorical limits of the project. This enabled an efficient work method, which also positively effected the complex permission processes. We were able to unite the several parts of the building and the various demarcations into one integral and coherent design.

The new building, located at the backside of the complex, will add a contemporary layer to the existing ensemble of buildings from different eras. The four individual parts of the complex will be connected by a central patio, formed by the reopened historical courtyard.
