Your best solution to date?
I am particularly proud of my work on the 2 International Finance Centre (2IFC) tower, the most prominent building on the Hong Kong skyline. A third of the way to completion when the extreme events of 9/11 occurred, we undertook significant retro-justification of the design of 2IFC, resulting in enhanced resistance and safety of the building.
Why is it significant?
Our solutions for 2IFC proved pivotal in the recommendations of Arup’s taskforce on extreme event mitigation for future tall building design and construction. As a result of my work on the taskforce I have since been invited as an expert onto international panels producing industry-wide guidance on high rise building design that delivers greater occupant safety.
Your particular skill?
I can lead teams in the delivery of difficult projects, with high degrees of innovation, or construction challenges. I also like to think I have a reasonable handle on keeping my wife and three young kids entertained at the same time.
Enthusiasm?
For me, the excitement of doing a significant project well, and particularly a project which is recognised and praised by the public at large, is very much a driver. It makes the hard work worthwhile.
Why Arup?
I have been in Arup for 20 years. It’s a company that treats its staff well and it gives me the opportunity to operate at the highest level of my profession with the most engaging of colleagues and clients.
