Cost management

We deliver successful commercial outcomes by bringing strategic insight to property portfolios.

Through intelligent cost management we help our clients realise value for money, whether we are partnering to deliver buildings, industrial plants and healthcare facilities or major railaviation and highways projects.

strive for the best strategic commercial management, while supporting our clients’ aspirations in quality, programme and sustainability, throughout a development’s whole lifecycle.

Strategic direction

Our cost managers help private and public sector clients to optimise their investment in developments. During planning, our cost and procurement advice informs better strategic decisions.

Our review of tunnel costs identified reliable benchmarks for High Speed 2, for example. And our early contribution to the Gladstone contingent water supply strategy helped a regional Australian water authority assess the cost implications of its standby plans for drought or demand growth.

For Melrose Arch, a major private sector mixed-use development in South Africa, Arup’s work encompassed economic impact analysis and masterplanning. As part of this work, a comprehensive business plan was prepared, a project office established on site and cost management processes fully integrated with the client’s financial systems to underpin the five phases of this 310,000m2 project.

Our cost managers are regularly consulted by investors who want to better understand their risks as part of technical due diligencebusiness transformation processes, and project risk and contingency management.

Sustained guidance

We ensure that projects evolve according to a client’s needs and aspirations, throughout the whole life of the asset. Arup’s value management specialists helped investors in Majadahonda Hospital, Madrid, Spain’s first private finance initiative (PFI) hospital, to understand and manage their risk, and proceed with confidence.

Our initial audit for Majadahonda, which aimed to meet growing local demand for health services, involved analysis of construction contracts as well as projected operational costs. As design progressed, we assessed design, construction and whole-life costs, and managed cost during construction.

At any stage of a project, we deliver cost certainty. We help clients manage procurement and engage with the supply chain. We also help our clients manage contract disputes.

A partner in design

Arup’s cost managers are integral to our design process. We inform design choices that realise high-performance outcomes and deliver commercial certainty – on projects from the Forth Replacement Crossing, the largest infrastructure project in Scotland for a generation, to an energy-efficient retrofit for EMC², one of Europe’s most significant ICT facilities.
