Queensland State Velodrome tops national steel awards

Australasia Press Office
14 September 2016

On Monday, 12 September, the Queensland State Velodrome was recognised as the top ‘Engineering Project’ at the Australian Steel Institute’s (ASI) national gala in Melbourne.

The ASI noted how the Queensland State Velodrome took advantage of various external cladding systems to meet required performance characteristics and support architecturally critical eaves detail that visually defines the building form.

The project team included the client (Stadiums Queensland, Office of the Commonwealth Games and Department of State Development), architect (Cox Architecture), contractor (Watpac) and steel fabricator (Beenleigh Steel Fabrications) with Arup as structural engineers.

The Queensland State Velodrome was up against the best and most innovative projects from each State and Territory – and this award is testament of the clever thinking and collaboration that goes into delivering a complex project on time and on budget. ” Ian Ainsworth Ian Ainsworth Principal

The Steel Awards are conducted biennially to promote excellence in steel design, recognising creative approaches with structural and architectural elements in the built environment.
