Visual impact assessment and modelling for proposed wind farm

Arup were commissioned to undertake a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) for eight 115m-high wind turbines.

Various guidance documents were employed in the preparation of the assessment including Landscape Institute and IEMA guidelines for LVIA and the Scottish Natural Heritage ‘Visual Representation of Windfarms’ good practice guidance.

Zones of Theoretical Visibility – topographical analyses of the visibility of a proposed object in the landscape – were generated using specialist software which utilises 3D terrain data from Ordnance Survey to build a model over which map data is draped.

Computer-generated line drawings (wirelines) indicating the appearance of the proposed wind farm were prepared for each viewpoint. From a number of viewpoints a photomontage image was prepared by superimposing the wireline image onto the photograph.
