Resilience, security and risk

We help businesses build resilience, and protect people, assets and operations.

Arup provides trusted security and resilience advice to private and public sector clients worldwide. We help organisations understand their exposure to threats, and make better informed responses.

Our services include strategic risk management, technical risk assessment, operational planning, security engineering and counter-terrorism measures. Arup has a long history in the protective design of buildings and infrastructure. By merging that expertise with real-world operations planning experience, we develop strategies that manage risk throughout the life of a project, programme or organisation.

An encompassing view

Whether considering risks that originate from natural hazards like earthquakes or human-driven threats such as political instability, we draw on unusually wide expertise to help clients with all that they need.

By understanding the full scope of a situation, we give clients deeper insight. For example, when Arup designed security systems for a new health service centre at Yale University, our involvement also helped Yale plan for the facility’s role as regional command and control centre during extreme events.

So while we help clients with legal and regulatory compliance, we also produce protective intelligence that gives an accurate picture of their exposure to risk, aiding sensible spending on mitigation measures. Our intelligence helps organisations decide which risks to protect against, which to mitigate and which to accept.

Arup take that intelligence further again with business continuity planning, enterprise risk management and operational planning services that help businesses avoid crises and become more resilient. Among other clients and projects, we assisted HSBC to consider, in its planning for the largest data operation in Asia, the impact of each aspect of business operations on reliable service delivery, and to plan accordingly.

Secure by design

Rather than developing add-on security measures for the built environment, Arup draws on our design understanding, rigorous quantitative analysis and research to shape inherently secure solutions, which enhance rather than detract from an architectural concept.

This incisive approach characterises our work in technical risk assessments and security engineering, as well as geomatic mapping and modelling services for high-risk sites. Arup provides advice, analysis and the design of protective measures, both physical and electronic, in all industry sectors.

Our work protects major transport hubs such as King’s Cross Station and Terminal 2 Dublin airport, key water and energy facilities, and government buildings including Canadian diplomatic offices. Likewise, we work with hospitals, banks, science and industry, commercial estates such as 30 St Mary Axe and art institutions such as the New Rijksmuseum.

Our counter-terrorism team has designed measures for diverse spaces and structures, including the National Assembly for Wales, and entertainment complexes such as the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort. The team includes pre-eminent specialists in areas from blast analysis and engineering to experts in mitigation against attack by hostile vehicles and chemical and biological weapons, building and façade resilience, weapon delivery mechanisms, shelter protection, and evacuation and invacuation strategies.

    Your best solution to date?

No single best – it is the refinement of the design process and resulting solutions across successive projects that has provided the most satisfaction and I hope greatest value to Clients. The most satisfying projects have been those where the team has been able to integrate with the Client’s operational staff and give immediate and tangible support to security personnel working under pressure – Macau Galaxy Phase 2 opening is a good example.

    Why is it significant?

Being able to bring a breadth of expertise to bear on very specific problems and help the Client steer necessary change.

    Your particular skill?

    Your best solution to date?

Most recently, it has to be the Kingdom Kampala project in 2010, a hotel, convention centre and retail business park in the centre of Kampala, Uganda.

    Why is it significant?

It validated our methodology, the idea of undertaking a threat and risk assessment and then being able to influence the design of this complex by ensuring ‘secure by design’ principles. It was a milestone in design and collaboration of the various disciplines for this iconic East African development.

    Your particular skill?

    Security masterplanning.

    Enthusiasm?

    Urban resilience.

    Why Arup?

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

    Why is it significant?

It was a project that included the upgrade of a video surveillance system that comprises hundreds of cameras, the design and construction of a new command center and renovation to build a security suite containing office space, training space and an operations center as well as the inclusion of special construction to provide mitigation against breach, ballistic, blast and other threats. Close collaboration with the architect, construction contractor and the Bank allowed for the upgrades and renovations to take place without compromising the security of the Bank throughout the construction process.
