Energy

Arup brings depth of experience to energy challenges worldwide.

For energy producers and users, the interplay between sustainable supply, demand management, efficiency and carbon mitigation is already intricate. Energy dilemmas are now becoming increasingly complex as global populations expand and energy markets, technology and legislation rapidly evolve.

Arup’s long experience in the energy sector – in both supply and demand – gives us comprehensive oversight of energy issues that cannot be solved in isolation.

Putting the pieces together

We define, design and deliver major projects for the entire energy chain from supply to transmission and demand. Our consultancy and engineering teams find practical solutions for the provision of secure, affordable, climate-friendly energy.

Our expertise spans energy strategy, energy storage, carbon managementrenewable energy supply, thermal and nuclear power systems, heat, gas and electricity transmission and distribution and oil and gas supply.

We apply our energy knowledge in diverse sectors including aviationresidential and commercial property, science and industry. Arup’s way is to examine its experience across sectors and share that knowledge as a basis for better solutions. We pooled our thinking in smart energy to create Slim City knowledge cards, which pinpoint issues that we consider will have major impact on communities and businesses.

We also bring our analytical skills to bear in specific regions or sectors. Our UK Energy Legislation Timeline brings clarity to emissions, energy and efficiency regulation, for instance, while our study for the US Transportation Review Board examined energy use as a sustainability measure in airports worldwide.

Realising complex projects

Arup thinks big. Our track record in delivering challenging energy projects backs that ambition.

We create teams in which technical experts work side-by-side with experienced project managers, cost estimators and security specialists. They deliver complex undertakings from South Africa’s biggest pipeline project, the Durban-Gauteng multi-products pipeline, to Qatar’s first fully-underground substation.

Adapting to a changing world

Wherever new ideas produce smarter energy, Arup has the capability to convert future-thinking into viable solutions. We combine commercial and technical innovation to push forward solutions in waste to energy, smart grid design, distributed energy systemscarbon capture and storage and renewable energy sources such as offshore wind and biomass.

Arup considers energy, water and waste together to promote greater integrated resource efficiency in everything we do. We combine design with our understanding of energy and systems performance to retrofit data centres for efficiency, set new benchmarks in low-energy buildings or look to the future with masterplans for low-carbon communities.
