Since 1966 The Arup Journal has presented the best of Arup's work and thinking in the firm's constantly developing areas of expertise.

The first issue of 2010 is a 'design for human performance' special. Some highlights include:

Are buildings getting better?

Adrian Leaman discusses this complex question and how we might begin to answer it. He presents a variety of findings from surveys of building users across the 1990s and 2000s.

High density boarding and alighting

A psycho-physical experiment. Arup used a purpose-built pedestrian movement laboratory to examine train passenger behaviour when boarding and alighting. Changes in variables from door width to step height were tested for their effects on passenger flow rate.

Human movement and safety

Many innovations in the field of human movement and safety have contributed to the success of recent projects. The Chinese National Aquatics Centre (Water Cube) and King's Cross St Pancras station are two developments that have benefited.
