Arup brings rigour, vision and tested expertise to the nuclear industry’s complex requirements.
Nuclear energy makes great demands on the safety and endurance of infrastructure solutions. For more than 30 years, Arup has matched its high-end skills to those involved requirements.
Our work, for operators including RWE Npower and BKW FMB Energie AG, covers each stage of the fuel cycle. It encompasses policy advice, design and development of new facilities, operation, decommissioning and clean up.
We bring advanced expertise to issues of earthquake resilience, contaminated land and groundwater remediation. In waste packaging, transportation, interim storage and long-term repository design, Arup’s research capacity and leadership in building physics and geotechnics underpin dependable solutions.
Trusted pioneers
Arup pursues safer, more efficient and more sustainable nuclear solutions. Since the 1980s, we have led the field in dynamic analysis of the effects of accidents on the transport packages, or flasks, for radioactive material. We continue to innovate in waste and material management, from long-term geological storage to contemporary transport and storage.
Through extensive experience we have refined the modelling and analysis techniques for designing and substantiating the design of nuclear transport packages. Our work in this area includes regulator-approved projects for Rolls Royce Marine and the British Nuclear Group as well as industry-leading research.
Arup also delivered a first in nuclear storage as lead consultant and design coordinator for the Trawsfynydd Intermediate Level Waste store. This ‘passive’ store is the first of its kind in the UK. By designing out mechanical and electrical systems we cut risk of systems failure and lowered operational costs. The store is also seismically qualified and designed for a 150-year life.
Sector-wide perspective
Our nuclear consultants gain a big-picture view of the sector by engaging with multiple stakeholders. We work closely with operators and developers, and also partner with local authorities to evaluate technical proposals for new plants.
For example, Arup reviewed the Hinkley Point C project on behalf of local authorities, using its specialist knowledge in town planning, environmental consulting, transport planning, maritime engineering, water resources and flood risk, acoustics, emergency planning and more.
Stakeholders benefit from Arup’s detailed understanding of nuclear operations. Operators gain from the oversight we then bring to planning and community engagement. All clients value our independent stance.
