High-rise buildings made out of timber: much more than sustainable

Timber constructions are proving increasingly popular. All around the globe, numerous approaches are being developed to integrate this sustainable material into the construction of high-rise buildings – far too often at the expense of sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
Arup has developed a concept that makes it possible to use timber both ecologically and economically in class 5 buildings and beyond. This concept is based on a modular timber hybrid construction method with timber-concrete composite ceilings and concrete core. The hybrid construction method combines the advantages of both materials, concrete and wood and fulfils all structural, fire protection and acoustic requirements. But not only that: the standardised timber hybrid construction system also proves economical.
Important for our architects: Participation is recognised by the Berlin Chamber of Architects with two teaching units.

The historical pagoda construction in Japan Peter Ross is one of the Arup Legends. The civil engineer worked for Arup from 1958 until his retirement in 2002. He has spent most of his career in research and development and enjoys high recognition both within and outside the company for his outstanding expertise in timber construction. |
