Oslo Municipality wishes to build a modern and functional building for the Munch Museum and the Stenersen Collections. The objective is to unify the collection of works by the great Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) and the art pieces of the collector and financier Rolf Stenersen (1899–1978). The building will also act as reference for a small scale urban redevelopment at the Bjorvika area in Oslo.
Arup services on the project include façade consultancy, envelope materials and compliance with a number of tough environmental objectives.
Together with the recently-opened Oslo Opera House and the future Deichmanske Main Library, this 570,000m2 area will form part of a group of important and varied cultural institutions in the Bjorvika district. The intervention provides public accessibility to the waterfront and opens the city towards the fjord. The new museum should also inject new life into the city and trigger positive regional and national effects.
Besides presenting its own collections, the museum will also organise international exhibitions, which Oslo and Norway are not able to host at present.
The property owner, HAV Eiendom, in close cooperation with Oslo Municipality, invited Herreros Arquitectos to participate in the 16,000m2 museum competition project. Herreros selected Arup as façade consultants. Once the competition was won, Arup covered the stages of concept and schematic design.
