Total Design in Stations: Integrating design and construction

Integrating design and construction creates opportunities to optimise the design of stations, providing buildable solutions that maximise the urban realm outcome.

Andrew Henry, the Technical Director for the Design Joint Venture helping Cross Yarra Partnership deliver the Melbourne Metro Tunnels and Stations PPP, shared some of the design challenges associated with designing underground stations, ranging from deep shafts and caverns in tight CBD spaces to station boxes in a range of urban environments. Andrew discussed the integration of engineering and architecture in the design of the stations on Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system, where challenges included poor ground conditions and deep station construction in tight urban environments.
