Grand opening for Syracuse Centre of Excellence

30 April 2010

On 5 March 2010 the grand opening and dedication ceremony was held for the HQ campus of the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (SyracuseCoE). Over a decade in the making, the project milestone was celebrated by over 700 representatives from government, industry, education and the general public.

The SyracuseCoE aims to foster collaborative research through two of the city’s thriving sectors, education and industry. Its new headquarters boasts 55,000 square feet of office, public and laboratory space, enabling research and business groups to develop products and services in the areas of indoor environmental quality, water resources, clean and renewable energy.

The new energy-efficient building is on target to achieve a LEED Platinum certification, the highest rating under the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard.

“The CoE is a great example of what can be achieved on a brown field site in an urban setting” says Arup Project Director, Nigel Nicholls. “The facility will help vitalise this part of Syracuse by providing world class indoor air quality laboratories and other research facilities.”

Arup worked alongside New York based design architects Toshiko Mori, and executive architects Ashley McGraw on the design of the new research facility. Arup was enlisted to lead the mechanical, electrical, public health, fire protection and structural engineering design, as well as consulting on lighting, acoustics and façade and information technology services.
