Mentoring matters says award-winning Water Leader

Daniel Lambert’s exceptional support to young engineers has been recognised with the prestigious Kamal Fernando Mentoring Award at the NSW Water Awards.

The award citation described Daniel, Arup’s Australasia Water Leader, as ‘an exemplar water industry leader’ with a ‘forward-thinking and far-reaching approach to mentoring’.

‘His mentorship and infectious passion for the water industry has been invaluable to the career progression of a significant number of engineers within Arup and the water industry more broadly,’ it said.

Within Arup, Daniel mentors less experienced team members, helping them develop technical and business skills, identify growth opportunities and build networks.  Many have gone onto senior roles within Arup, industry or government.

He has also facilitated the recruitment of undergraduate engineers, allowing them to work part time while still at university.

“Daniel has done everything within his power to ensure my success in the industry and has made the transition into working life seamless while being understanding of my university commitments,” said Danika Smith, Graduate Engineer.

Through the Australian Water Association Mentoring Programme, Daniel is mentoring several younger engineers, including Sydney Water employees. Through the Water Services Association of Australia, he is mentoring Watercare staff in Auckland.

Honoured as the Australian Water Association’s Water Professional of the Year 2018, Daniel has actively promoted the importance of water within Arup and the industry. His fresh thinking and new approach with the Future of Urban Water report for Sydney Water saw him recognised as one of Australia’s ‘Most Innovative Engineers’. He has also played a pivotal role in the development of community partnering programs with WaterAid, Engineers without Borders, Habitat for Humanity and World Toilet Organisation.

The most recent award is a legacy of Kamal Fernando who made significant contributions to the NSW water industry, including mentoring many industry professionals.
