A new look for the Sydney skyline, 200 George Street, opened on Wednesday 22 June.
The tower features Australia’s first closed-cavity façade, and its innovative timber blinds create a distinctive golden landmark amongst the city’s concrete and steel backdrop.
200 George Street’s natural aesthetic and innovative façade provide an insight into the building’s aspirations – to be one of Australia’s most technologically advanced and sustainable properties. A combination of smart sensors and highly efficient services have seen it achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating from the Green Buildings Council of Australia.
Arup contributed the environmentally sustainable design for the project; alongside mechanical, electrical, hydraulics and fire engineering; vertical transportation; and lighting design. The firm also provided building physics analysis and early concept work which identified the closed-cavity façade solution.

To achieve the 6 Star rating, a high degree of innovation was required. The façade while providing high-clarity engagement with the surrounding city, maintains exceptional performance through its double skin and clever blind design.
The building’s network of sensors respond to occupancy and environmental conditions to optimise performance – from responsive shading to manage heat and light penetration, to automated lighting and ventilation based on use.
200 George is also Australia’s first full LED lit building, which provides energy consumption savings of between 30 and 50 per cent, and reduces waste to landfill significantly through the longer life of the globes. The building also includes water recycling, the latest in energy and water efficient fixtures, and over 300 bicycle spaces to promote healthy lifestyles.
A smart tenancy app for Mirvac’s new headquarters will provide users with a detailed summary of the tenancy’s sustainability performance, and connections to live data on building operation.
The 37 storey tower has already taken its place amongst Sydney’s finest commercial properties, providing new premises for EY and owner-contractor Mirvac.
