World’s largest dome roof under construction

3 October 2012

With less than two years before its targeted completion in April 2014, the Singapore Sports Hub is witnessing positive progress on the construction of the country’s new National Stadium.

Designed by Arup’s sports venue designers and engineers, the 55,000 seat National Stadium will feature an ultra-thin 310m wide free-spanning steel dome roof with a 20,000m2 retractable roof which incorporates some 3,000 LED lights that line the steel trusses wrapped around the dome.

It really is a landmark building, one that will be very visible on the Singapore skyline. Clive Lewis, Arup’s lead sports venue designer

At night, the retractable roof doubles up as a giant projector screen on both sides and is will be one of the largest addressable LED screens in the world.

The construction of the National Stadium is the launch pad for many other key elements in the project. It will be Asia’s only event site with the technology, capacity and services to cater to residents, overseas visitors, sports professionals and global artists 365 days a year.
