The first time this iconic Seattle market has grown in 40 years, the Pike Place MarketFront is the first project to directly interface with the city’s waterfront plan, which itself aims to better connect downtown to the waterfront.

Several officials from the City and State were in attendance as the project opened to much fanfare. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray thanked the project team members and the Seattle community for their vision and commitment to redeveloping the market into a world-class waterfront.

The 120,000ft2 development replaced a .75-acre parking lot with 30,000ft2 of open public plaza space, restaurants, a neighborhood centre, and table space for farmers, craftspeople, and artisan purveyors.

“Instead of a jagged surface parking lot there are now hundreds of secured parking stalls, instead of unsafe campsites there are now dozens of units of low-income senior housing (and with some of the best views of the city), and instead of towering blackberry bushes there are farmers selling fresh, seasonal produce…We’re exceptionally grateful to all those who provided input on the design of MarketFront so it would serve all the market’s needs and be a true reflection of all the market’s values.”

In total, Arup provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering as well as communications and security services for the project. We also provided specialist structural engineering on two large vent stacks that stand 25 feet above any inhabited space and carry exhaust from the existing fluid cooler equipment up and away from public areas.
