Shaping our City

Shaping our City is a conversation with leaders from industry, government and the community to inform the future of cities.

Curated by Arup, this series aims to foster genuine, inclusive discussion about how we can grow in line with our global contemporaries without losing sight of our local identity. Each session considers a city theme from diverse perspectives before engaging the audience to shape and localise the discussion.

Here are some of our events:

Place

29 August 2017, Sydney

In recent times we’ve seen significant shifts in how people work, play and travel. Shopping centres have become destinations for entertainment, people work from anywhere, libraries are increasingly social meeting places, and transport hubs are becoming destinations in themselves. As we see this blurring of the role of places and their traditional uses, how should we as a design community reframe our thinking and respond? How can we create places that have a stronger connection with the people that use them?

Our panellists:

  • Tim Horton, Registrar of the NSW Architects Registration Board
  • Alison Page, Indigenous Designer and Filmmaker
  • Kylie Legge, Director, Place Partners
  • Justin Madden, Australasia Cities Leader, Arup

Data

16 March 2016, Melbourne

Melbourne 2026 will look different to the Melbourne of today. With the advent of more and more sources of digital data, there is an evident shift in the planning and implementation of our infrastructure needs towards smart city modelling. However this poses questions such as: What is data not telling us? Are we being pushed or pulled by this abundance of data?

Our panellists

  • Jacyl Shaw, Director, Culture and Community Development,  Carlton Connect Initiative
  • Aaron de Rozario,  Chief Executive Officer, Taxi Services Commission
  • Pascal Bourgeat, Director of Consulting, Behavioural and Cognitive Science, Ipsos Australia
  • Greg Stone, Head of Digital Services, Arup in Australasia
