The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) announced the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay as the recipient of this year’s Vista Award for new construction.

ASHE’s Vista Awards celebrate healthcare project teams as opposed to design — honouring collaboration, creativity, and foresight in the creation of optimal healthcare environments. Winning project teams demonstrated teamwork throughout all stages of their projects, in addition to minimising patient disruption during construction and markedly improving the patients’ experience afterward.

UCSF Mission Bay featured a strongly collaborative and communicative team comprising Stantec, Rutherford & Chekene, the University of California, San Francisco, DPR Construction, and Arup. Utilising an integrated project delivery strategy, the owners, design team, and contractors were able to work side by side in a “big room.” Advanced use of building information modelling also allowed the team to see and resolve issues together before work began on the real building.

The LEED Gold-certified hospital complex strengthened the facility’s already-renowned programmes for women, children, and cancer patients, and officially started serving patients in 2015.
