Fredericia Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark

High-quality district based on sustainable urban design principles.

In 2008, the municipality of Fredericia and Realdania, joined in partnership to develop a 140,000m2 industrial site in the Fredericia harbour into a new city district with attractive housing, office-space and cultural and recreational facilities.

The ambition is to create a high-quality district based on sustainable urban design principles including urban qualities and amenities that supports a livable district. In particular it is stressed that the new district should include links between the present and the unique history of Fredericia including a connection from the historic city centre to the new city district.

For this project, Arup provided urban design services as well as consultancy on sustainability, energy, food, transport, environmental risk, civil and infrastructure.

In addtion to integrating the new district with the existing city, Arup has proposed temporary and permanent activities including food production and markets to bring life to the site from day one of construction, plus a unique integrated energy strategy.
