Arup is expanding its global architectural offering with the creation of a new specialist team in Spain. Focused on the energy, transport, science and industry markets, the team will provide comprehensive architectural services as part of the firm’s multi-disciplinary design services, from concept design stage all the way to delivery.

The Madrid-based architectural practice consolidates Arup’s commitment to 'Total Design', fostering cross-collaboration across a range of built environment specialisms. Delivering functional and sustainable designs, the team in Madrid strengthens Arup’s international architectural network, with more than 250 practitioners in cities like London, Milan, Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong and Melbourne.

Led by José Márquez, who is relocating from Arup in London, the team in Spain will strengthen the firm’s offering in emerging markets such as Latin America. Márquez brings more than 15 years of experience, including work at Mossessian Architecture and Heatherwick Studio.

Past work includes the refurbishment of a flagship office building for British Land in London, the masterplan for the Lalla Yeddouna square regeneration project in Fez and the design for Birmingham’s new high-speed interchange station.

Total Design was a revolutionary concept in the 1960s and our aim is to continue to develop this model, offering the solutions that clients currently demand and anticipating the future aspirations of our constantly evolving society. Embracing digital tools allows us to respond to these increasingly complex and ever-changing challenges. Arup’s holistic approach offers clients greater flexibility and certainty from the very early stages of a project. We work hard to understand our client’s needs, so we can offer a quality, value-added service that serves them and society as a whole. ” Jose Marquez Jose Marquez Arup Spain Architecture Leader

Arup’s architectural practice was founded fifty-five years ago driven by Ove Arup’s concept of Total Design, which aspires to integrate architects and engineers and other professions together to enhance the design process across the built environment.
