York Lions Stadium, Toronto, ON

This stadium hosted athletic competitions during the 2015 Pan American Games.

Formerly known as the CIBC Pan Am Athletics Stadium, York Lions Stadium was constructed on the campus of Toronto’s York University for the 2015 Pan American Games. The stadium hosted athletic (track and field) competitions during the 2015 Games and then become a permanent stadium for York University and community athletic activities.

Arup designed the new stadium to meet the technical requirements of both the International Association of Athletics Federations and Canadian Interuniversity Sport. It was designed as a Class 1 track suitable for hosting Olympic and other top-tier competitions. The stadium has a 400-metre track and an infield that supports throwing and jumping disciplines, as well as a scoreboard, professional broadcast capabilities, athlete change rooms, equipment storage, and classroom space. Spectators in the grandstand have an unobstructed view of the field of play.

The Pan Am Games are the third largest international, multisport competition, second only to the summer Olympics and the Asian Games. In addition to the Athletics Stadium, Arup was the lead engineer for two other venues used during the 2015 Games in Toronto: Tim Hortons Field and Mattamy National Cycling Centre. For this project, Arup provided structuralmechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as, IT/communications and security consulting, and sports lighting.
