Arup has won an international design competition to provide an urban drainage masterplan for the city of Shanghai in conjunction with Shanghai Urban Construction Design & Research Institute.
Organised by the Shanghai Water Authority, the competition aims to come up with an advanced and implementable strategy for Shanghai’s highly populated city centre with regards to very challenging runoff quantity control and quality improvement targets.
A key part of the solution is to introduce more blue and green infrastructure – which relates to all natural and semi-natural landscaping elements while optimising grey infrastructure – which relates to all engineered infrastructure. The integration of blue, green and grey infrastructure will help the city not only meet its stormwater improvement target, but also build climate change resilience and provide a better wellbeing for its citizens.
The comprehensive strategy is a result of four months’ joint effort by the Arup global team and involved experts from across our mainland China, UK, USA, Spain, and Hong Kong offices.
