Yesterday Camp Adventure held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its iconic observation tower, designed to deliver breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding forest of Gisselfeld Kloster in Denmark.

The award-winning project, which will link a 900 metres-long treetop walk to a 45 metres tall observation tower, was designed by EFFEKT Architects in collaboration with Arup, and will be a new unique destination experience at the heart of Camp Adventure, a treetop adventure park one hour south of Copenhagen.

The ceremony, held last Thursday signals the start of the construction phase, and was well attended with participants including the Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Brian Mikkelsen.

In order to bring the experience to life, guests were invited to wear Augmented Reality (AR) goggles projecting a full-size hologram of the observation tower onsite. Guests were also offered a lift on a crane platform up 45 metres into the sky, the height of the observation deck, to discover stunning views of the surrounding woodland.

We have been working on this project for a long time and breaking ground is a huge milestone for us. When the observation tower is completed we will be able to offer a unique experience, helping us to communicate with nature in a new way ” Kasper Larsen Business Developer at Camp Adventure

It has been very important for us to create an attraction this is both sustainable and entertaining. The observation tower gives visitors the unique opportunity to take vertical tour up through the forest canopy, while still protecting the local ecosystems ” Tue Foged Partner of EFFEKT Architects

The treetop walk winds its way gently through protected woodland, leading the way to the tower and observation deck, which is nested in the forest canopy 45 meters above the ground. Both the walkway and the tower feature a step-free timber ramp to carry all visitors up to the highest point in the observation deck. The spiralling ramp allows visitors to enjoy changing vistas of the forest canopy and the thriving local biotope from multiple vantage points.

The tower is the product of a digitally-driven design process: it is a striking showpiece that is nevertheless sympathetic to its natural surrounds. It is very exciting to see this collaborative design effort from Arup and EFFEKT com to fruition ” Sean Lineham Sean Lineham Structural Engineer

The hyperboloid tower features straight structural elements to deliver a super efficient build with a visually arresting identity. Made of weathered steel and locally sourced wooden slats, the structure is designed to gently echo and blend in with its surrounds.
